Denver Case Study using NMR for aquifer characterization

Magnetic resonance (NMR) logging is well suited for helping manage aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) projects.

An excellent example is this project in Denver Colorado, in which they used Vista Clara NMR borehole logging tools to characterize the Denver basin aquifer properties, especially hydraulic conductivity, for potential aquifer storage and recovery.

The aquifers of interest are relatively deep at up to 600 meters and there had previously been very limited data on aquifer variability, especially for locations beneath the center of the city.  Seven exploration wells had been drilled but drill cuttings and standard geophysical logging were inadequate for identifying likely aquifer zones and for characterizing aquifer properties.

Using Vista Clara Javelin tools and software provided unambiguous data indicating large variations in depths and distribution of aquifer properties across relatively small distances of just a few kilometers.  The NMR logs provided quantified hydraulic conductivity and effective porosity at approximately 1 meter resolution for depths of up to 600 meters.  These measurements were very valuable for accurately characterizing the aquifers as well as helping identify likely locations for injection sites to recharge underground aquifers.  The use of NMR logging is also very affordable compared to the cost of more drilling at approximately $200,000 per borehole.
